Almondell Shetlands is a family run stud situated on the outskirts of Edinburgh, tucked away in the valley of the River Almond from which our name is derived.

My love of horses started when I was a child. Like most little girls I always wanted my own pony, however I was married by the time my dream came true and I finally owned my own horse. Having given up riding a number of years ago and missing the horses I decided to buy two ‘Shetties’ for my grand children who now like myself are also ‘hooked on Shetlands’. I loved the ponies so much that I decided to start showing them and also breeding them. That was five years ago and now we have a collected a small herd of these adorable ponies - some of which are also our PARTY PONIES.

We have an established herd of registered standard ponies with excellent pedigrees boasting a variety of colours and we are now proudly producing homebred stock of show quality and substance with true native characteristics.

Shetland ponies are renowned for their hardiness and strength. Our foundation stock was carefully selected with the advice and guidance of several long established studs.

It is based on the very best breeding which, we feel provides us with good strong bone. Our black ponies are mainly Wells, Harviestoun and Lakehead bloodlines. Our coloureds are Birchmoor, Hutton and Eastlands.

Our aim is to breed ponies with correct conformation, exceptional movement, presence and a kind temperament. We pride ourselves on our Shetlands being friendly and easy to handle.

From birth every pony has plenty of attention and handling, making them well mannered and a pleasure to own. We have ponies suitable for riding, driving, in-hand showing or pets.

Through showing and breeding our ponies we have made great friends from studs north and south, whose advice and guidance has been invaluable to us.
